Useful Kitchen Items, Not Meant for the Kitchen

Yes, Great Kitchen Items

-Some people would not consider these things as kitchen products, but they work so nicely. Here are 5 things I have in my kitchen that are not your typical kitchen gadgets….

  1. Disposable shower caps – These are great bowl covers. My grandmother use to use the ones that were intended for kitchen use. She would simply wash them and use them over and over. They kept the air out and the moisture in, to keep things from drying out in the fridge. They work on round and square bowls. They eliminate plastic wrap frustrations. Works great for dishes you may take to pass at a potluck dinner in a disposable container.  Your host will love that they do not have to return your covered bowl. They are also great to cover that plate of cookies or pie your sending to school for the bake sale. Have you ever tried to put plastic wrap on an aluminum pie pan? Here is a link to AliExpress, which is a good place to acquire these, I prefer the clear ones myself.
  2. kitchen clipHair Claw Clips – Use these as bag clips. You can get a dozen for a dollar at your local dollar store and they work great to keep your cereal bags closed or that bag of chips you didn’t polish off 🙂 You can also use a clothes pin, but I prefer the hair clips.
  3. Dry Erase Markers – Use these to label and make notes. Date products you open, because once opened, you can not go by the “sell by” dates on the packages. Time goes by faster than you think and dates are easily forgotten. Jot a quick note, such as, “don’t even think of eating that last piece of pie, Love Mom” on the refrigerator door. (use only dry erase and check to insure it will not damage your door face in an inconspicuous area first.) I have never had a problem with dry erase on my refrigerator.
  4. Toothbrush – for getting into nooks and crannies when cleaning.
  5. Plain Dental Floss – This is handy for cutting soft foods.  Good to use on soft cheeses, cookie dough or anything fairly soft that may stick to a knife. Can also be used to tie things up, like turkey legs or or combination roasts. Why make a two layer cake, when you can have a four layer cake? (this will also work for oblong cakes, to make it a layer cake) After you remove the cooled cake from the pan, place toothpicks to evenly guide your floss as you place it around the middle of the cake to slice it horizontally. Once in Place, cross the ends to tie once and pull on them evenly in a horizontal motion. See my post for Make Ordinary Cake, Not So Ordinary, for more details about how to split a cake with dental floss.

Give some of these items a try, see for yourself just how useful they can be in your kitchen too.

If you have gadgets or items in your kitchen that are not really intended to use in the kitchen, or considered unusual, please share them.
