Neat Closet Shoe Rack

No Tools, No Marks, No Space, No Problem

Your Shoes Will Love You

Shoes seem to always take over the floor of my closet, but not any more. I have discovered a clever way to make use of a very common product that has many uses. One of these uses is to make a shoe rest.

Just take two spring tension rods that are most commonly used for shower curtain rods and adjust them to fit from wall to wall where you have space. May be either under a shelf, in back of the closet, just under the clothing that hangs. Pretty much any place that has wall on each side that you can span 72 inches or less.

Place the back one slightly higher than the front one, about 3-4 inches from the back of the wall if able.  Place the second one about 5 inches away from the first one and slightly lower. This is a great way to use space that may not be useful for anything else. Mine fit nicely under one of my shelves as you can see in the picture. It worked perfectly and my shelf supports fit nicely between the rods.

I had purchased these rods for about $7 each at one of my favorite discount stores. Originally they were purchased to do something else with, then I stored them away. I was going to mount a couple of curtain rods I had no use for, to get the same effect, but remembered I had the tension rods, which was much easier to do. No tools needed and no marks on the walls either.

Suggestions

I like that these are so easy to put in place and adjust to fit my needs. I am able to store up to 8 pair of shoes in my space. Another nice feature is being able to configure them to size.  They can be used for any size shoe big or small. For high heals, the top rod can be used to hang the heal on and you can place the other rod out and down a little to stabilize them.

You can also hang your shoes from them or use a single rod to hang sandals, slippers and such. If you keep those neat little hangers the stores often use to display them, use those. You can hang most open toe, backless shoes and sandals from a basic hanger by slipping the arm of the hanger through the open toe. I like the hangers that have a strap catch on them to hold the shoe securely in place. I’d never dream of hanging my shoes on the closet rod with my clothes and coats, but to hang them on a shoe rack is simply wonderful. There is no other shoe rack I have seen that is quite a versatile as this.

Tip

If your not able to add enough tension to the rods to prevent slipping, just use a piece of  no slip/grip pad. Commonly used for cupboard or drawer liner and under area rugs. It works really well if your rod has a hard plastic end cap instead of soft rubber ones. This product also has many uses. I will have to post about them some day soon.

You can often find these at resale shops pretty cheap. They may not match, but that will not affect function. If the end caps are missing or broken, you can buy cane ends. A plastic cap from a bottle will work and you can peal out the inner seal on some, then glue it to the top of the cap for grip and cushion.
