Alternative to Shaving Cream
Stop the Itch
-In case you missed this tip in my About Me page, I decided to post about it. I use to suffer from incredibly itchy legs a day or two after I shaved. I literately wanted to dig my skin off. I stumbled upon this helpful solution. It worked for me, see if it will work for you too. It’s also an inexpensive alternative to shaving cream.
I use hair conditioner to shave with. My conditioner is usually rather thick so all I need is an amount the size of a kidney bean to do each leg (just above the knee down). I will apply it to my wet leg and spread it where ever I am going to shave. While shaving in an upward motion, I am also following it with my free hand, wiping gently up the leg, each time the razor completes a swipe. This serves a few functions.
- It continuously keeps conditioner on the leg where the razor may have removed it.
- Once the blade of the razor scrapes the conditioner off the leg as it removes the hair, you are quickly applying conditioner to this area of the leg to reduce irritation.
- It causes the hair (stubble), to stand up in the direction, opposite of the direction the razor will go. Then as the hair begins to fall back down, to lay against the leg, your razor will pick it up easier, with the next swipe of the razor.
- Your reducing dry leg contact and optimizing hair placement.
- Allows you to easily feel any stubble that may have been missed, so you can quickly give it another swipe.
Another nice thing about conditioner to shave with, your razor tends to last longer. Shaving cream tends to hold residue and coat the blade over time. Conditioner seems to release tiny hairs and skin cells easier.
This works very well for “manscaping” as well as the feminine version of this grooming process. The conditioner does not easily rinse away once it gets a little water on it like so many shaving creams tend to do. There is only one down side that I can see, you can not easily see exactly where your razor has been. Who is to say the razor has hit every bit of surface anyway. If you go over that area again once cream has been swiped away, your dry shaving and that causes irritation. You can go over and over areas if you use conditioner as long as you are also continuously using your free hand to redistribute the conditioner to areas that you have scraped away with the razor. A little conditioner goes a long way when it comes to skin.
**Note I do not use conditioner for shaving under my arms, I usually just use soap and water. The soap removes the deodorant that may still be on the area I’m shaving.
I hope you give this a try and find this a useful aid when it comes to a clean shaven leg or personal areas.
